Wheel and Street

It is said that urban street in the West encountered revoutionary change twice in urban history in conjuction with advent of wheels: one is horse-drawn wheels in the eleventh century and the other is automobile wheels in the 20th century. That's why European medieval cities were stone-paved all over city's alleys, plazas and sqaures. The reason why streets were not paved in Korean cities, as evidenced in Seoul, can be explained by the absence of wheeled carriers. This article proves that point.
